Cinnamon Bay – Day 2, part 2

In case you missed it, see parts: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5

There were two more significant things to see on the trial, a set of petroglyphs and a the ruins of yet another Dutch sugar cane mill.

Petroglyphs

I was really excited to see these. Carved around 900-1500 AD by the pre-columbian Tainos, they reside at the base of one of the few fresh-water pools on the island casting their reflection on its surface. Will thought they looked like space aliens, I just thought they looked like something I could finally draw:

Ruins

According to a guidebook, at the peak of sugar cane production, there were over 190 plantations on this tiny little island (I guess it’s no wonder that little of the native vegetation survived). This particular plantation had been modernized after the ban on slavery with a steam engine. Look closely at the engine and you can see the large hive of bees (lower left) that Will has to negotiate to get this picture. Also, if you ever do go to these ruins, make sure you look up. We’d been wandering around inside for quite some time before one of us noticed all the bats hanging from the high celling.

After the trail it was another 2.5 miles back to the camp. We arrived sweaty and deliciously tired. Following a short nap it was a swim in the ocean, a quick shower, and into town for an excellent dinner at the Fish Trap restaurant.
