Isabel has come and gone. From a category 5 hurricane down to a tropical storm she’s spent her breath and passed on. The storm caused more problems that I had predicted, but nothing as dire as the newscaster’s hype (Doom! Doom!! DOOM I TELL YOU!!!). For Will and I, it meant losing power at around 9 on Thursday night and not getting it back till around 11:00 the next morning. We sat around watching movies on my powerbook, enjoying the storm, and catching an occasional green flash in the sky rendered by some dying transformer.
Friday we got up early to retrieved the cars We’d parked them across the street in the Target parking lot so they’d be safe from falling limbs (a tactic others should have employed). That done, we toured around to see the damage. Mostly it was just a lot of leaves and sticks everywhere, but there was the occasional fallen tree and broken window.
Down in Old Town was where all the major flooding had occurred. The water had risen all the way up to Lee street during the night and I’m sure caused a lot of damage to the Torpedo Factory and many of the shops down by the water. There was quite a crowd on hand with police keeping everyone back, television stations, and the like. King Street, the main strip, was a mess and it wasn’t even close to high tide. There’s going to be some serious cleanup to do.
Oh, and damn I wish I’d had a canoe to.
